Short story of a dream came true

Sogno Demetra MontalcinoWine

When we arrived at the farm in 2015 the vineyard was abandoned, invaded by ivy and “vitalba” (a strong and invasive vine) and with a lot of failed areas. Slowly we cleaned, restored it and started to propagate the plants.

Lately we discover that this was one of the oldest vineyards of Montalcino, planted in 1964-’66, a rare treasure of ancient clones of Sangiovese. We would like to maintain this treasure by grafting the slips on new rootstocks and completing the work of filling the gaps. About 500 plants are missed at the moment.

Half row of the vineyard is planted with white grapes that now we blend with the red ones even if we would like to make a white wine with these grapes in the future (but this is another dream to be dreamed of …)

In 2018 we made our first harvest of Sangiovese grapes and made wine with the help of friends: Giacomo from Il Cocco winery who, in 2018 and 2019, helped us to renew the vineyard and manage it; and Fabio from La Fornace winery who helped us to make the wine in 2020 because he has larger spaces in the cellar and way more time.

The Sogno Demetra wine is a natural red wine made with our Sangiovese grapes grown in Montalcino, plus some others that we buy from an organic grape grower. We usually produce no more than 1.200 bottles per year.

The wine it’s fresh, fruity, perfect for aperitifs with Italian cheese and cold cuts but also great with some Primi Piatti and light meat. The goal is to produce a genuine, friendly and drinkable wine ideal for every moment of the day because our family is the first and bigger consumer of this wine.

On the label there is Demetra, the ancient Greek’s goddess of agriculture from a painting by our mom, Rossana Tintori, dated 1984 (I was 5 at that age and I remember when she was painting it at home :-))

The name of the wine, Sogno Demetra, means either “the dream of Demetra” but also “dreaming of Demetra”. This is exactly what we did to get what we run today here in Locanda Demetra: we dreamed of a place like this for years before realizing it but, at the same time, we follow up dreaming of what we would like to improve and go with this project.

Salute!
